What was the planned Allied invasion of Kyushu called in the final months of World War II?
Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
The planned Allied invasion of Kyushu was called Operation Olympic.
Operation Olympic was the first phase of Operation Downfall, the proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands. It was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1945, with landings on Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island. A second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for the Tokyo area of Honshu in March 1946.
The invasion never took place because Japan surrendered in August 1945. Allied planners had prepared for extremely difficult fighting, drawing on the casualties and resistance seen at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Japanese forces were also preparing for a homeland defense campaign.
Operation Olympic is often confused with Operation Downfall. Downfall was the overall invasion plan, while Olympic referred specifically to the Kyushu phase. Operation Overlord, by contrast, was the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944.
