What was the original title of the 1929 film now known internationally as Pandora's Box?

The story behind the answer

The original German title of the 1929 film now known internationally as Pandora's Box was Die Büchse der Pandora.

G. W. Pabst directed the film in Germany, where it was released under the German title Die Büchse der Pandora. English-language distribution and reference works commonly use the translated title Pandora's Box. The film stars American actress Louise Brooks as Lulu.

The title comes from Frank Wedekind's play Pandora's Box, one of the two dramas used as source material. In German, “Büchse” means a box, case, or container, making the title a direct translation of the familiar mythological expression rather than a different story.

The film's international identity can therefore produce two correct-looking titles depending on the language and context. “Lulu” is the name of the protagonist, not the original title, while The Blue Angel is a separate 1930 German film directed by Josef von Sternberg.
