What was the original name of the organization now known as the World Surf League?

The story behind the answer

The organization now known as the World Surf League was originally called International Professional Surfers.

International Professional Surfers, commonly abbreviated IPS, was established in 1976 to organize a professional world tour for elite surfers. It later became the Association of Surfing Professionals, or ASP, in 1982. The organization adopted the name World Surf League in 2015.

These name changes reflect the development of professional surfing from a relatively small international circuit into a global sports league. The modern WSL organizes the Championship Tour, the sport's top annual competition, along with qualifying and regional events.

The IPS name is sometimes confused with the International Surfing Association, or ISA. The ISA is a separate international governing body that oversees amateur and Olympic-style surfing competition. The WSL primarily runs professional events and awards its own world titles.
