What was the original name of Ravana's son Indrajit?

The story behind the answer

The original name of Ravana’s son Indrajit was Meghanada. In the Ramayana tradition, Meghanada was Ravana and Mandodari’s eldest son and the crown prince of Lanka.

He earned the name Indrajit—“conqueror of Indra”—after defeating and capturing Indra, king of the devas. Brahma later granted him this title, which became his best-known name in the war against Rama. The name Meghanada is associated with thunder or a thunderous roar, reflecting the story that his birth cry sounded like rolling thunder.

Meghanada was a formidable archer and master of supernatural warfare. He fought Rama’s forces using invisibility, celestial weapons and powerful rituals. In later retellings, his wife is usually called Sulochana, although that detail is not prominent in Valmiki’s earliest epic recension.

A common mix-up is treating Indrajit as his birth name. Indrajit is an earned epithet, while Meghanada is the name by which he was originally known. Trisiras, Atikaya and Akshayakumara were other figures associated with Ravana’s family or army.
