What was the original name of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was debated?
Answer
Pennsylvania State House
Answer
Pennsylvania State House
The original name of Independence Hall was the Pennsylvania State House.
The building in Philadelphia was completed in 1753 for the colonial government of Pennsylvania. The Second Continental Congress met there during the American Revolution, and Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in the building in 1776.
It also hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, where delegates drafted the United States Constitution. Because of these events, the structure became one of the most important surviving sites associated with both American independence and the creation of the federal government.
The building acquired the name Independence Hall after the American Revolution. It stands within Independence National Historical Park and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Liberty Bell was also associated with the Pennsylvania State House, although the bell and the hall are separate historic objects.
