The original name of Eggo frozen waffles was Froffles.
The name was a blend of “frozen” and “waffles,” describing a product that could be stored in the freezer and prepared at home without mixing batter or using a waffle iron. The Dorsa brothers—Frank, Anthony and Samuel—developed the frozen waffle process in California.
The waffles entered supermarkets in 1953. The company later adopted the name Eggo, which had originally been associated with the brothers’ Eggo Mayonnaise. The shorter name eventually became the identity of the frozen-waffle brand.
A common mix-up is assuming “Eggo” was the original product name because it is now so strongly associated with frozen waffles. Another source of confusion is the brand’s association with eggs: “Eggo” evokes an egg-based breakfast, but the documented earlier name was Froffles. Eggo later expanded beyond waffles into pancakes, French toast and breakfast sandwiches.
