What was the original Japanese title of Nintendo’s Animal Crossing?

The story behind the answer

The original Japanese title of Nintendo’s Animal Crossing was Dōbutsu no Mori.

Nintendo released Dōbutsu no Mori for the Nintendo 64 in Japan in 2001. The title translates roughly as “Animal Forest,” reflecting the game’s village setting and its cast of anthropomorphic animal neighbors. Nintendo later enhanced the concept for the GameCube and released that version internationally as Animal Crossing in 2002.

The game’s real-time calendar, daily activities, collectible items, and open-ended social play became defining features of the series. Rather than focusing on a conventional final boss or linear campaign, players could decorate a home, pay off a mortgage, fish, collect fossils, and interact with villagers.

The Japanese Nintendo 64 release used the system’s 64DD-related development lineage, while the international GameCube version added content and used memory cards to preserve data. The phrase Animal Crossing therefore refers to the international series name, whereas Dōbutsu no Mori is the original Japanese title.
