What was the original Japanese name of Pokémon Red and Green?
Answer
Pocket Monsters Red and Green
Answer
Pocket Monsters Red and Green
The original Japanese games were called Pocket Monsters Red and Green.
They were released for the Game Boy on February 27, 1996, and formed the first entries in the Pokémon role-playing game series. The English-language releases later became Pokémon Red and Blue, not Red and Green.
The Japanese version of Blue was a later enhanced edition, initially distributed through CoroCoro Comic before receiving a wider retail release. Its updated artwork and programming became the foundation for the overseas Red and Blue versions.
This naming history causes frequent confusion because the original Japanese Green version was not released internationally at the time. The international games also changed some Pokémon distributions, so completing the original Pokédex required trading between versions.
