What was the official title of Hirohito's proclamation announcing Japan's acceptance of the Allied surrender terms?

The story behind the answer

The official title was Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War.

Emperor Hirohito's rescript was broadcast to the Japanese public at noon on August 15, 1945. Rather than using a simple modern phrase such as “Japan surrenders,” it announced that Japan had decided to accept the terms of the joint declaration issued by the Allied powers. Its formal language reflected the conventions of the imperial court.

The address referred to the changing military situation and the use of a new and devastating weapon. Hirohito stated that continuing the war would lead to the ruin of Japan and the extinction of human civilization. The speech was heard through a recording made at the Imperial Palace rather than through a live broadcast.

The title is often confused with “Gyokuon-hōsō,” or “Jewel Voice Broadcast,” the later name for the broadcast event. The rescript was the imperial document read over the radio; Gyokuon-hōsō describes its transmission and historical legacy.
