Answer
Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War
The official title of Emperor Hirohito’s radio document was Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War.
Hirohito’s recorded reading of the rescript was broadcast at noon Japan Standard Time on 15 August 1945. It announced that Japan would accept the terms of the Potsdam Declaration, although the rescript used formal and indirect language rather than simply saying that Japan had surrendered.
The broadcast is widely known as the Gyokuon-hōsō, meaning the “broadcast of the jeweled voice.” It was the first time most Japanese people had heard the Emperor speak publicly. Because the recording was difficult to understand and used classical court language, broadcasters immediately clarified that Japan had agreed to surrender.
The rescript was recorded at the Imperial Palace on 14 August. Military officers opposed to surrender attempted a coup that night and searched for the recordings, but the records were preserved and broadcast the next day.
