What was the North American release date of Pokémon Gold and Silver?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Gold and Silver were released in North America on October 15, 2000.

The Game Boy Color titles had already debuted in Japan on November 21, 1999. Nintendo initially announced a September 2000 North American window, but the final date was later set for October 15, following strong pre-order demand and extensive promotion.

The games reached Australia on October 13, 2000, and Europe on April 6, 2001. These staggered dates are a common source of confusion, especially because some retailers reportedly sold copies several days before the official North American date.

Gold and Silver introduced the Johto region, 100 new species, breeding, held items, and a real-time clock. Their successful launch continued Pokémon’s expansion beyond the original Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow games.
