Uber acquired the electric bike rental service Jump in 2018.
Jump began as Social Bicycles, a company founded in 2010 to develop dockless bicycle-sharing systems. It launched its bikes in 2013 and rebranded as JUMP in January 2018. Unlike station-based bike systems, Jump bikes could be located and unlocked through an app, making them useful for short urban journeys without a fixed docking network.
Uber first partnered with Jump in San Francisco, allowing riders to find and rent the company’s electric bicycles through the Uber app. In April 2018, Uber acquired Jump Bikes in a deal reported at roughly $200 million. The acquisition supported Uber’s effort to expand beyond cars into “micromobility,” including e-bikes and later scooters.
Jump’s bikes were distinctive for their bright red-orange frames and built-in electric assistance. Uber eventually transferred the Jump business to Lime in 2020. Bird, Spin, and Lime are separate micromobility brands, so they are common wrong answers when the question specifically asks about Uber’s 2018 acquisition.
