What was the name of the Wright brothers' first powered airplane?
Answer
Wright Flyer
Answer
Wright Flyer
The Wright brothers’ first powered airplane was the Wright Flyer. Orville Wright made its first successful flight on December 17, 1903, near Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, close to the town then known as Kitty Hawk.
The single-seat biplane used a 12-horsepower gasoline engine, two pusher propellers, and the brothers’ pioneering wing-warping control system. The aircraft flew four times that day; Orville’s first flight lasted 12 seconds, while the fourth covered 852 feet under Wilbur Wright’s control.
“Kitty Hawk” is a common mix-up because the flights took place in the Kitty Hawk area, and the aircraft has sometimes been called Kitty Hawk, Flyer I, or the 1903 Flyer. However, Wright Flyer is the standard canonical answer. The machine was badly damaged by wind after the fourth flight and never flew again; the restored aircraft is displayed at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
