What was the name of the Wright brothers’ 1904 aircraft used at Huffman Prairie?
Answer
Wright Flyer II
Answer
Wright Flyer II
The Wright brothers’ 1904 aircraft used at Huffman Prairie was the Wright Flyer II.
The Flyer II was the brothers’ second powered aircraft and the successor to the machine that flew at Kitty Hawk in 1903. It incorporated changes intended to improve performance and handling, including a somewhat heavier structure and alterations to its engine and airframe. The brothers tested it at Huffman Prairie, outside Dayton, Ohio.
The 1904 season was difficult at first. The Flyer II struggled with takeoffs, and the brothers used a catapult system to help launch it in the relatively calm Ohio conditions. Through repeated experiments, they improved their ability to turn, circle, and control the aircraft.
The aircraft was eventually replaced by the Wright Flyer III in 1905. That later machine became the brothers’ first genuinely practical airplane, capable of sustained, reliable flights and more advanced maneuvering.
