Released in October 2006, Endless Wire was The Who’s eleventh studio album and their first collection of new original studio material since It’s Hard in 1982. The long gap reflected the band’s changing circumstances, including solo projects, extended periods of inactivity, and the 2002 death of bassist John Entwistle.

The album grew partly from Pete Townshend’s musical project The Boy Who Heard Music. Its centerpiece is a sequence of songs sometimes described as a mini-opera, titled “Wire & Glass,” which had also been issued separately as an EP before the full album. Townshend wrote most of the material and played several instruments, while Pino Palladino took the main bass role and Zak Starkey and Peter Huntington contributed drums.

A common mix-up is confusing Endless Wire with Wire & Glass. The latter is a related 2006 mini-opera EP, while Endless Wire is the full studio album. It reached No. 7 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 9 in the UK.
