The villa where Mary Shelley stayed during the summer of 1816 was Villa Diodati. It stood in Cologny, near Lake Geneva, and was rented by Lord Byron from June to November that year.

Byron stayed at the villa with his physician, John William Polidori. Mary Godwin, who later became Mary Shelley, visited frequently with Percy Bysshe Shelley and her stepsister Claire Clairmont, while the couple stayed nearby at Maison Chapuis. Unusually cold, stormy weather kept the group indoors for long periods.

During one rainy stretch in June, they read translated German ghost stories, including Fantasmagoriana, and Byron suggested that each person write a supernatural tale. Mary’s imaginative response eventually became Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Polidori’s contribution developed into The Vampyre, an influential early modern vampire story.

A common mix-up is assuming Mary wrote the entire novel inside Villa Diodati. The villa was the setting for the story’s famous conception and early drafting; she continued developing and revising Frankenstein afterward, completing the manuscript in 1817.
