What was the name of the Viking-associated trading town in Sweden that flourished on the island of Gotland?

The story behind the answer

Visby was the Viking-associated trading town on the Swedish island of Gotland.

Visby developed as a Baltic trading center on Gotland, an island ideally placed between Scandinavia, the eastern Baltic, and routes leading toward Russia. The town’s commercial importance expanded over centuries, and it later became one of the leading cities of the Hanseatic League.

The earliest phases of Visby’s history are connected with Viking Age maritime trade, although many of the stone structures visible today date from the medieval period after the Viking Age. Archaeological finds from Gotland include coins, jewelry, weapons, and other objects showing extensive contacts across the Baltic region.

Visby is often confused with Birka, another Swedish trading center. Birka was located on the island of Björkö in Lake Mälaren, whereas Visby is on Gotland. The two towns belonged to different regional trading networks and historical settings.
