What was the name of the Viking-age trading town near modern Larvik, Norway?

The story behind the answer

Kaupang was the Viking-age trading town near modern Larvik in Norway.

Kaupang stood in the Skiringssal area of Vestfold and developed during the late eighth century. It is usually identified with the trading place called Skiringssal or Kaupang in early written and archaeological discussions, although the exact relationship between the names has been debated.

Excavations have revealed evidence of craft production, trade, housing, and imported goods. Finds include glass, pottery, metal objects, coins, and materials connected with textile and metalworking activities. The settlement formed part of a wider commercial network linking Scandinavia with the North Sea and Baltic regions.

Kaupang declined during the 10th century. Its role is often compared with that of Birka in Sweden and Hedeby in southern Denmark, but the sites were separate settlements with different regional settings and histories.
