The United States used Operation Nickel Grass to airlift weapons and supplies to Israel during the Yom Kippur War.

The airlift began on October 14, 1973, after the war’s opening successes by Egypt and Syria created urgent Israeli shortages. The United States moved tanks, artillery, ammunition, aircraft parts, and other military supplies to Israel. The operation was conducted primarily by U.S. Air Force C-141 Starlifter and C-5 Galaxy aircraft.

Nickel Grass ran through November 14, continuing after the major battlefield fighting had stopped. Approximately 22,000 tons of matériel were delivered. The scale of the operation helped Israel replace losses and sustain its counteroffensive, while also demonstrating the strategic importance of American support.

The airlift had wider consequences. Arab oil-producing states imposed an oil embargo on countries seen as supporting Israel, contributing to the 1973 oil crisis. The operation is sometimes confused with Operation Magic Carpet, the earlier postwar airlift that transported Yemenite Jews to Israel; the two missions were unrelated.
