American Freedom Train
Answer
American Freedom Train
The American Freedom Train toured the United States for the 1976 Bicentennial.
The traveling exhibition operated from April 1, 1975, to December 31, 1976. It carried historical artifacts and toured communities as part of the nationwide commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
The train consisted of 26 cars and was hauled by three famous steam locomotives during different portions of its route: Reading Company No. 2101, Southern Pacific No. 4449, and Texas & Pacific No. 610. Diesel locomotives were also used on some sections because of track and operating conditions.
The American Freedom Train is sometimes confused with the Freedom Bell, a Liberty Bell replica that traveled aboard the train. The train itself was the larger mobile museum and patriotic attraction, while the bell was one featured object associated with the tour.
