What was the name of the tournament where Federer won his first ATP title?
Answer
Milan Indoor
Answer
Milan Indoor
Federer won his first ATP title at the 2001 Milan Indoor tournament. He defeated France's Julien Boutter in the singles final, winning 6–4, 6–7, 6–4 on indoor carpet in Milan, Italy.
The title arrived when Federer was 19 and marked the first major breakthrough of his professional career. He had already reached a final in Marseille in 2000 and was beginning to establish himself on the ATP Tour. The Milan victory showed that he could handle high-level competition and win a tournament rather than merely produce isolated upsets.
That same 2001 season also included Federer's famous five-set victory over Pete Sampras in the fourth round at Wimbledon. Federer later became known primarily for his success on grass and hard courts, but his first ATP trophy came on an indoor carpet surface. Milan Indoor was part of the ATP International Series and was played at the PalaLido from 29 January to 4 February 2001.
