The theater where Abraham Lincoln was shot was Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.
On the night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln attended the comedy Our American Cousin with Mary Todd Lincoln and two guests. During the performance, actor and Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth entered the presidential box and shot Lincoln in the back of the head with a derringer pistol.
Lincoln was carried across the street to the Petersen House, where doctors treated him through the night. He never regained consciousness and died on the morning of April 15, 1865, only days after General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House.
Ford’s Theatre had originally been a Baptist church before John T. Ford converted it into a theater. It remains a historic site and continues to operate as a theater, while the adjacent Petersen House and museum interpret the assassination and its aftermath.
