The spin-off series that followed Colonel Potter, Klinger, and Father Mulcahy was AfterMASH. The sitcom premiered in 1983, shortly after M*A*S*H ended, and moved the characters from a Korean War field hospital to civilian life in the United States.
Harry Morgan returned as Colonel Sherman T. Potter, who became chief of staff at the fictional General Pershing Veterans' Hospital in Missouri. Jamie Farr reprised Maxwell Klinger, now adjusting to married life and working at the hospital, while William Christopher returned as Father John Mulcahy. Rosalind Chao also continued as Soon-Lee Klinger, whom Klinger had married in the M*A*S*H finale.
AfterMASH explored retirement, bureaucracy, veterans' health, family pressures, and the difficulty of returning home after war. Its premise grew from the fact that Morgan, Farr, and Christopher were the principal M*A*S*H cast members interested in continuing the characters beyond the eleventh season. The series lasted two seasons, though it never matched the cultural impact or ratings of its predecessor.
