Apollo 11 was the spacecraft mission that carried the first humans to the Moon in 1969.
NASA launched Apollo 11 on 16 July 1969 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The crew consisted of commander Neil Armstrong, lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, and command module pilot Michael Collins.
Armstrong and Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility on 20 July. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon, followed by Aldrin, while Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard Columbia.
Apollo 8 had already carried humans around the Moon in 1968, but it did not land. Apollo 11 returned to Earth on 24 July 1969, and its success fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s goal of a crewed lunar landing before the decade ended.
