The shepherd boy who became the second human treated with Pasteur’s rabies vaccine was Jean-Baptiste Jupille. He was treated in 1885 after fighting off a rabid dog that threatened other children in the French village of Villers-Farlay.

Jupille’s case followed the treatment of Joseph Meister, a nine-year-old Alsatian boy who received Pasteur’s first human rabies treatment in July 1885. Meister had been badly bitten by a rabid dog, while Jupille was bitten while attempting to protect children. Pasteur’s team administered a series of injections made from progressively less-attenuated infected nervous tissue.
