What was the name of the rocket that launched Apollo 11?
Answer
Saturn V
Answer
Saturn V
The Saturn V was the rocket that launched Apollo 11 toward the Moon.
Standing about 111 metres tall, Saturn V was a three-stage heavy-lift launch vehicle developed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. Its five F-1 engines powered the first stage, while J-2 engines propelled the upper stages.
Apollo 11 lifted off from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969. Saturn V placed the spacecraft into Earth orbit and then sent it toward the Moon with a translunar injection burn. The rocket’s job ended after separating the Apollo spacecraft from the upper stage.
Saturn V is often confused with Saturn IB, which launched earlier Apollo missions and Skylab flights but was not powerful enough for a crewed lunar landing. Apollo 11’s crew was Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins.
