Answer
Our American Cousin
The name of the play Lincoln was watching when he was shot was Our American Cousin.
Written by English playwright Tom Taylor, Our American Cousin was a three-act farce about Asa Trenchard, an awkward American who travels to England to claim a family inheritance. The play premiered in New York in 1858 and became a popular comedy in both the United States and Britain.
On April 14, 1865, Lincoln attended a performance at Ford’s Theatre with Mary Todd Lincoln, Henry Rathbone, and Clara Harris. John Wilkes Booth, an actor familiar with the production, timed his shot during a burst of laughter in Act III, when Harry Hawk delivered one of the play’s best-known comic lines.
The assassination made the play historically infamous, even though it had been a successful comedy before that night. Ford’s Theatre later avoided staging it for many years out of respect for Lincoln’s memory. The play itself was not about the president, the Civil War, or the assassination.
