What was the name of the Philadelphia building where the First Continental Congress met in 1774?

The story behind the answer

The First Continental Congress met at Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia in 1774.

Delegates from 12 of Britain’s 13 North American colonies gathered there from September 5 to October 26, 1774. Georgia did not send delegates because Loyalist sentiment remained strong there, although the colony joined the revolutionary movement later.

The meeting was called in response to Britain’s Intolerable Acts, punitive laws passed after the Boston Tea Party. The delegates coordinated colonial resistance, adopted the Continental Association to organize a boycott of British goods, and sent a petition to King George III.

Carpenters’ Hall is sometimes confused with Independence Hall, where the Second Continental Congress later met and where the Declaration of Independence was adopted. The First Continental Congress’s meeting at Carpenters’ Hall came before the Revolutionary War formally began and helped create intercolonial cooperation.
