What was the name of the only son of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou?
Answer
Edward of Westminster
Answer
Edward of Westminster
The only son of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou was Edward of Westminster, also known as Edward of Lancaster. He was born at Westminster Palace on 13 October 1453, during a period when political tensions between the Lancastrian and Yorkist factions were already destabilising England.
Edward became Prince of Wales and the Lancastrian heir. Because Henry VI suffered recurring mental illness, Margaret played an increasingly prominent role in defending their son’s inheritance. Edward was raised as the symbol of the Lancastrian claim after Edward IV of York seized the throne in 1461.
Edward spent much of his youth in exile with his mother, seeking support in France and elsewhere. In 1470, his planned marriage to Anne Neville helped cement an alliance between Margaret and Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, who briefly restored Henry VI. Edward finally returned to England in 1471, but the Lancastrian cause was defeated at Tewkesbury. Edward was killed there on 4 May at the age of seventeen—the only child of Henry and Margaret, not merely their only son.
