What was the name of the new royal dynasty after the Norman Conquest?
Answer
House of Normandy
Answer
House of Normandy
The new royal dynasty after the Norman Conquest was the House of Normandy. William the Conqueror, formerly Duke William of Normandy, established this dynasty on the English throne after defeating Harold Godwinson in 1066.
The house traced its lineage to Rollo, the Viking leader who became the first ruler of Normandy in the early tenth century. William and his immediate successors linked the crowns of England and Normandy, although different family members sometimes held one title without holding the other.
William’s sons William II and Henry I continued the Norman line in England. The dynasty’s position was disrupted after Henry I’s death in 1135, when the succession crisis known as the Anarchy pitted his daughter Matilda against her cousin Stephen. Henry II, Matilda’s son, became king in 1154 and began the Angevin or Plantagenet line. The House of Wessex belonged to the earlier Anglo-Saxon monarchy, while the Tudors came much later.
