What was the name of the lunar plain where Apollo 11 made the first crewed Moon landing?
Answer
Sea of Tranquility
Answer
Sea of Tranquility
Apollo 11 landed on the Sea of Tranquility, a broad lunar plain on the Moon’s near side.
The lunar module Eagle touched down there on July 20, 1969, carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon, followed by Aldrin.
The landing fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 goal of sending a person to the Moon and returning them safely to Earth before the decade ended. The crew launched from Florida on July 16 and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24.
The Sea of Tranquility is not an ocean of liquid water. It is a mare, a dark basaltic plain formed largely by ancient volcanic activity and later impact events. Apollo 11 collected lunar rocks and soil, deployed scientific instruments, photographed the surface, and demonstrated that crewed exploration beyond Earth was possible.
