What was the name of the large Viking battle fought near York on 25 September 1066?

The story behind the answer

The large Viking battle fought near York on 25 September 1066 was the Battle of Stamford Bridge.

The battle was fought between the English army of King Harold Godwinson and an invading Norwegian force led by King Harald Hardrada, who was supported by Harold’s rebellious brother Tostig Godwinson. The English king marched his army rapidly north after learning that the Norwegians had defeated an English force at Fulford near York.

Harold’s army surprised the Norwegians at Stamford Bridge. After a hard-fought engagement, Harald Hardrada and Tostig were killed, and the Norwegian invasion collapsed. The victory was a major military success for Harold Godwinson, but it left his forces exhausted and far from southern England.

Only three days after the battle, William, Duke of Normandy, landed in Sussex. Harold had to march south again and faced William at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October 1066. Stamford Bridge therefore ended the major Norwegian attempt to conquer England, while Hastings led to the Norman conquest.
