Jackie Robinson attended Pasadena Junior College after graduating from John Muir Technical High School. The school, now known as Pasadena City College, became an important stage in his development as an elite multi-sport athlete.

At Pasadena, Robinson played football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was a quarterback and safety in football, a shortstop and leadoff hitter in baseball, and a standout broad jumper. On May 7, 1938, he broke an American junior-college broad-jump record previously held by his older brother Mack.

Robinson also earned All-Southland Junior College honors in baseball and was named the region's most valuable player in 1938. A fractured ankle suffered while playing football later affected his military deployment timeline. He then transferred to UCLA, where he became the first student-athlete to earn varsity letters in four sports.
