What was the name of the July 1945 Allied declaration demanding Japan’s surrender?

The story behind the answer

The Potsdam Declaration was the July 1945 Allied declaration demanding Japan’s surrender.

The United States, Britain, and China issued the declaration on July 26, 1945, during the Potsdam Conference. It called for the unconditional surrender of Japan’s armed forces and warned that refusal would bring “prompt and utter destruction.” The Soviet Union did not sign it because it was not yet at war with Japan.

The declaration outlined the broad postwar conditions expected by the Allies. Japan would lose its conquered territories, its armed forces would be disarmed, and its sovereignty would be limited mainly to the home islands and other islands designated by the Allies.

Japan’s government initially did not accept the declaration. The atomic bombings, Soviet entry into the war, and internal political pressure later changed the situation. On August 14, Japan formally accepted the terms, and Hirohito announced that decision to the public the next day.
