What was the name of the Japanese radio address that announced acceptance of the Allied surrender terms?

The story behind the answer

The radio address announcing Japan’s acceptance of the Allied surrender terms was the Jewel Voice Broadcast.

Emperor Hirohito recorded the speech late on August 14, 1945, and it was transmitted at noon on August 15. The broadcast told listeners that Japan had accepted the Potsdam Declaration and instructed the Japanese people to endure the difficult future created by defeat.

The title “Jewel Voice Broadcast” is an English translation of a Japanese expression referring to the emperor’s voice. Hirohito’s formal language was unfamiliar to many listeners, and the word “surrender” was not stated plainly. Even so, the announcement was understood as the end of Japan’s war effort.

The recording was almost intercepted by officers who attempted to prevent the broadcast during the Kyūjō incident, an attempted coup at the Imperial Palace. The speech remains one of the most important broadcasts in modern Japanese history and is closely associated with Japan’s V-J Day announcement.
