The giant Liberty Bell replica presented by Britain during the 1976 Bicentennial was called the Bicentennial Bell.
The bell was cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, the same London foundry associated with the original Liberty Bell. It was presented to the United States by Queen Elizabeth II on behalf of the British people during her July 1976 state visit.
The Bicentennial Bell was a six-times-oversize replica weighing about 12,000 pounds. Its inscription expressed friendship between the British and American peoples and included the words “Let freedom ring.” The bell was housed in a tower at Philadelphia’s former visitor center.
It should not be confused with the original Liberty Bell, which remained in Philadelphia and was not recast for the anniversary. The replica served as a diplomatic gift and a symbolic gesture of shared historical ties.
