What was the name of the French ship that carried the Statue of Liberty to the United States in 1885?

The story behind the answer

The French ship that carried the Statue of Liberty to the United States in 1885 was the Isère.

Isère was a French Navy transport frigate used to move the disassembled statue from France to New York. The statue had been designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with engineering assistance from Gustave Eiffel, and was presented as a gift from the people of France to the United States.

The sculpture was shipped in hundreds of crates after being dismantled. Isère crossed the Atlantic and arrived in New York Harbor in June 1885. The pieces were then reassembled on Bedloe’s Island, now called Liberty Island.

The completed monument was formally dedicated on October 28, 1886, nearly a century after American independence. Isère is often confused with the French ship that transported Lafayette in 1824, but it was specifically the Statue of Liberty’s transport vessel.
