What was the name of the first web server software developed at CERN?

The story behind the answer

The first web server software developed at CERN was CERN httpd. It was created during the early World Wide Web project and is also described as the first web server software ever developed.

Tim Berners-Lee began developing it at CERN around 1990 alongside the first web browser and the technologies HTML and HTTP. The server originally ran on a NeXT computer and hosted the early web at CERN. Its job was to receive HTTP requests and return documents, establishing the basic client-server pattern still used by websites today.

CERN httpd was written in C and later gained features such as proxy support, caching, password protection, forms, and server-side interfaces. In 1991, CERN made the software available beyond the laboratory, helping other research institutions set up web servers. Development later moved to the World Wide Web Consortium, where the software became known as W3C httpd. Apache and Microsoft IIS came later and should not be confused with this pioneering CERN server.
