What was the name of the first spacecraft to land on Titan?
Answer
Huygens
Answer
Huygens
Huygens was the first spacecraft to land on Titan.
The European Space Agency built Huygens as part of the joint Cassini–Huygens mission to Saturn. The lander separated from NASA’s Cassini orbiter and descended through Titan’s thick atmosphere on January 14, 2005.
Huygens landed on Titan’s surface after a parachute-assisted descent lasting about two and a half hours. It transmitted images and measurements of the atmosphere and ground, revealing a world with methane clouds, channels, rounded ice-rich stones, and a surface resembling a frozen landscape.
Cassini and Huygens are often treated as one spacecraft, but they were separate vehicles. Cassini remained in orbit around Saturn, while Huygens was designed specifically to descend through Titan’s atmosphere and land. Titan is Saturn’s largest moon and the only moon known to have a dense, nitrogen-rich atmosphere.
