What was the name of the first space station placed in orbit?

The story behind the answer

Salyut 1 was the first space station placed in orbit, launching from the Soviet Union on April 19, 1971.

The station was part of the Soviet Salyut programme and was also designated DOS-1. It was launched uncrewed, then visited by the Soyuz 11 crew in June 1971, who became the first people to live aboard an orbiting space station.

Salyut 1 remained in orbit for about six months. Its first visiting crew, Soyuz 10, reached the station but could not enter because of a docking-system problem. Soyuz 11 successfully docked and spent 23 days aboard.

Soyuz 11’s crew died during the return journey when their capsule depressurized. The accident led to major changes in Soviet spacecraft and spacesuit procedures, and the station was deliberately deorbited in October 1971.
