Crew Dragon was the first privately developed spacecraft to carry astronauts into orbit, doing so on SpaceX’s Demo-2 mission in May 2020.
The spacecraft launched from Kennedy Space Center on 30 May 2020 atop a Falcon 9 rocket. NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley flew to the International Space Station, where they stayed for about two months before returning to Earth.
Demo-2 was the first crewed orbital mission launched from US soil since the Space Shuttle’s final flight in 2011. It also marked the first crewed orbital flight by a commercial spacecraft developed under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.
Boeing’s Starliner is another commercial crew spacecraft, but it flew its first crewed test later. SpaceShipTwo performs suborbital flights and does not reach orbit.
