Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the first planned stage of Operation Downfall, aimed at southern Kyushu. The Allied operation was scheduled to begin on 1 November 1945 but was canceled when Japan surrendered.
Olympic was designed to seize the southern third of Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island. The captured territory would have provided airfields, ports, and a staging area for the later invasion of Honshu under Operation Coronet.
The plan called for landings near Miyazaki, Ariake, and Kushikino. Allied planners expected strong Japanese resistance, and the Japanese military was preparing to concentrate forces and civilian defenders against the anticipated assault. The operation would have involved a very large naval and air force supporting the ground landings.
Olympic must not be confused with Operation Coronet. Olympic concerned Kyushu, while Coronet was the proposed follow-up attack on the Kanto Plain near Tokyo. Both operations were parts of Downfall and neither was carried out.
