French inventor Louis Le Prince filmed the brief sequence on 14 October 1888 at Oakwood Grange in Roundhay, Leeds. The surviving footage shows four people—including Le Prince’s son Adolphe and his in-laws Joseph and Sarah Whitley—walking around a garden. It lasts only about two seconds and contains roughly 20 surviving frames.

Roundhay Garden Scene is widely described as the oldest surviving film, although claims about the “first film” depend on definitions. Earlier photographic experiments, such as Étienne-Jules Marey’s chronophotography, captured motion but were not necessarily films intended for projection. Le Prince’s work is also sometimes confused with later films by Thomas Edison or the Lumière brothers, who helped popularize cinema in the 1890s.

The original negative was lost, but the surviving frames were copied by London’s Science Museum in 1931 and later digitally animated. Le Prince disappeared mysteriously in 1890, before he could publicly demonstrate his invention.
