Apollo 11 was the first crewed mission to land humans on the Moon.
NASA launched Apollo 11 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 16, 1969. The crew consisted of commander Neil Armstrong, lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, and command module pilot Michael Collins.
Armstrong and Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle in the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility on July 20, 1969. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface, followed shortly by Aldrin, while Collins remained in lunar orbit.
The mission returned safely to Earth on July 24. Apollo 11 brought back lunar rock and soil samples and demonstrated the United States’ achievement in the space race. Apollo 8 had orbited the Moon earlier, but it did not land there.
