What was the name of the first Apple laptop?

The story behind the answer

Apple’s first laptop product was the Macintosh Portable.

Apple introduced the Macintosh Portable on September 20, 1989, making it the company’s first battery-powered portable Macintosh and its first laptop product. It was designed to bring Macintosh software and performance outside the desktop, but its engineering ambitions produced a machine that was unusually large, heavy, and expensive by laptop standards.

The Portable used a Motorola 68000 processor running at 16 MHz, a 9.8-inch black-and-white active-matrix display, and a built-in trackball. Its display was praised for sharpness, while the removable lead-acid battery could provide lengthy operation under favorable conditions. The computer weighed about 16 pounds, however, and its price and bulk limited its appeal.

A common mix-up is naming the PowerBook 100 as Apple’s first laptop. The PowerBook line arrived in 1991 and replaced the Macintosh Portable, but it was a later, smaller family. The PowerBook 100 became more influential because its layout placed the pointing device in front of the keyboard and included a palm-rest design that became standard in later notebooks. The Macintosh Portable was discontinued in October 1991 after disappointing sales.
