The Egyptian president who resigned in 2011 after the Arab Spring was Hosni Mubarak.
Mubarak had governed Egypt since 1981, succeeding Anwar Sadat after Sadat’s assassination. His nearly 30-year presidency was marked by strong executive control, emergency laws, restricted political freedoms, and allegations of corruption. He remained a central U.S. ally in the region and maintained Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel.
The Egyptian revolution began on January 25, 2011, inspired partly by uprisings in Tunisia and broader Arab Spring protests. Demonstrators gathered in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and other cities, demanding political reform, economic justice, and Mubarak’s removal. After 18 days of mass demonstrations, Vice President Omar Suleiman announced on February 11 that Mubarak had resigned and transferred power to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.
A common mix-up is confusing Mubarak with other Arab leaders challenged during the Arab Spring. Bashar al-Assad remained president of Syria, Ali Abdullah Saleh resigned as Yemen’s president later in 2012, and Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed in Libya in 2011.
