Hans Christian Andersen died at the country estate Rolighed in 1875.
Rolighed was the home of the Melchior family near Copenhagen. Andersen spent his final period there while suffering from serious health problems, including liver cancer. He died at the estate on 4 August 1875.
The name Rolighed means “tranquility” or “quietude” in Danish, and the estate became part of the story of Andersen’s final years. His hosts, Moritz and Dorothea Melchior, had supported him and provided a comfortable place for him to stay.
Rolighed should not be confused with Andersen’s burial place, Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen, or with the many museums and former residences associated with him. The estate was where he died; Assistens Cemetery was where he was buried.
