What was the name of the Buddha's father?
Answer
Suddhodana
Answer
Suddhodana
The Buddha’s father was named Suddhodana.
Suddhodana is described in Buddhist tradition as the father of Siddhartha Gautama, the future Buddha. He was associated with the Shakya clan and is often called a king in later biographies, although historians commonly interpret the Shakya political system as a clan-based or republican oligarchy rather than a conventional hereditary monarchy.
Siddhartha’s mother was Maya, also called Queen Maya or Mahamaya. She died soon after his birth, and her sister Mahapajapati Gautami later helped raise him. Suddhodana’s family also included Nanda and Sundari Nanda, traditionally described as children of his marriage to Mahapajapati.
The name can be confused with Siddhartha, the Buddha’s personal name before awakening, or with Mahamaya, his mother’s name. Much of Suddhodana’s biography comes from Buddhist texts and later tradition, so details about his political title should not be treated as identical to modern ideas of kingship.
