The bell presented by Queen Elizabeth II to Philadelphia during the 1976 Bicentennial was the Bicentennial Bell.
Queen Elizabeth presented the bell on July 6, 1976, on behalf of the British people. It was intended as a gesture of friendship during the American Bicentennial, despite the two countries' opposing sides during the American Revolutionary War.
The bell is a replica of Philadelphia's Liberty Bell and was cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, the same foundry associated with the original Liberty Bell. Its inscription identifies it as a gift from the people of Britain and includes the phrase “LET FREEDOM RING.”
The Bicentennial Bell should not be confused with the Liberty Bell itself, which remained in Philadelphia. The royal gift was a separate object, created specifically for the 1976 anniversary and presented during the queen's American state visit.
