The B-29 that dropped the Hiroshima atomic bomb was named Enola Gay.
Enola Gay was a Boeing B-29 Superfortress assigned to the 393rd Bombardment Squadron. Colonel Paul Tibbets piloted the aircraft during the mission on August 6, 1945. The bomber carried Little Boy, a uranium gun-type atomic weapon, from North Field on Tinian in the Mariana Islands.
The aircraft released Little Boy over Hiroshima at 8:15 a.m. local time. The bomb detonated approximately 1,900 feet above the city, causing devastating destruction and loss of life.
Tibbets named the aircraft after his mother, Enola Gay Tibbets, shortly before the mission. The bomber was accompanied by aircraft including The Great Artiste, which carried scientific instruments, and a photography aircraft later named Necessary Evil.
